The last time I wrote on my website was on the 12th of September. I often set myself goals, like posting a blog article every day for a month, only to realize 15 days in that I was 15 days too ambitious. There are many ways to be more realistic about goals. But why is it important to be realistic in the first place?

What I realize is that when I start something, I usually add the phrase “every day” to it. Suddenly, it feels like a mountain of work, and I abandon it quickly. What’s the point of starting if this is going to be permanent? “Permanent” feels boring; it feels like falling into a trap. It leaves no room for revision. And yet, it’s a good way to achieve results. The more consistently you do something, the better you get at it. That’s no secret.

The other day, I came across a video where a guy on a podcast was discussing the tendency to add “every day” behind any activity we start. He explained, “Just take out the phrase ‘every day.’” By doing that, you can focus on the action itself without worrying about how long you’ll keep it up, replace it, or if you’ll stop. If I commit to working out, just doing one workout is a win. But if I say, “I’m going to work out every day,” I’m setting myself up for failure.

I took a step back and thought, “What he just said is interesting.” My whole life, I’ve tried to build processes. I would list several habits I wanted to develop, meticulously noting how regularly I wanted to do each one. Reading? Every day. Working out? All weekdays. Writing? Every day. Journaling? Every day.

Trust me, it never really was the case. The exception might have been journaling. That’s one habit I managed to maintain for a long time, and I still write almost every day. The difference now is that my focus isn’t on writing daily; it’s on cultivating the effort to reflect and get into that mindset before I go to sleep. Some days, that might mean talking aloud and recording myself. Other days, I might count a deep conversation with a friend as a moment to reflect. On some days, I might not need it, and that’s okay.

I feel like removing “every day” from my objectives has helped lower the stakes, making my goals more achievable on a daily basis. I don’t have to pressure myself into doing it just because I said it would be every day.

From my experience, I become more reliable to myself and to others when I’m realistic about my goals. Being realistic boosts my confidence because I know what I can achieve. I become a better planner and achieve more.

It might sound counterintuitive, but sometimes building processes around objectives just for the sake of having some can be counterproductive, less reliable, and even destructive. A lack of realism can create the grounds for deception.

What’s the next best step you can take? I first heard this question from Oprah, and I think it’s brilliant. It shifts your focus from the overwhelming big picture to the most immediate action you can take right now. It encourages you to check in with how you’re feeling and to listen to yourself. Instead of stressing over how much you need to accomplish, ask yourself what the first thing is that you need to do for yourself today. Celebrate each small win and every step forward. So, what’s the next best move you can make?

I’ve just about gotten back on my feet. Lack of sleep doesn’t do me any favors. As I’ve mentioned before, I can be pretty extreme. I quickly fall into a vicious cycle where I end up sabotaging myself. After my night in Strasbourg—if you can really call it a night—I took the 10:47 train and arrived at Gare de l’Est. On my way home, I stopped by Lidl, where I almost always do my shopping. My squirrel-like habits are still going strong, and I really like the store with its special weekly arrivals that feel so familiar to me.

From the seventh floor of CSH in Mannheim, where I lived for three semesters, I had a view of the Lidl near the freeway where I used to go all the time. When things weren’t going well, I knew I could take refuge in the aisles of the discount store and treat myself without worrying about the prices. I’ve got money. As long as I’m not in an excessively expensive place, I can afford to buy what I want without stressing about the cost, which feels like real freedom to me.

I walk into the Lidl in Strasbourg-Saint-Denis and do my usual shopping: 1.5 kg of chicken with bones (it’s better, and yes, I eat a lot of chicken), eggs (because I eat a lot of those too), and a bunch of vegetables. Lately, I’ve been too lazy to cook carbs, so I usually just have meat with a veggie stir-fry, without rice, bread, or potatoes. It would be too much work.

At home, I prepare exactly that. I have 30 minutes before my weekly call with ISCEA (my main client). I heat up the pan and defrost a hamburger patty in the microwave. I have time to set up the chicken in the Instant Pot that my mom gave me for my 20th birthday—a birthday I spent alone in Bochum, the city I moved to for my work placements during my alternance. I add spices and salt. The pan is nice and hot. I quickly slice half a zucchini and let it cook in the pan while I chop the bell pepper.

The vegetables are still crisp when I open the Zoom link for the call. I eat during the video call. The Americans never seemed bothered that I ate in front of them. They were quite surprised when I asked if I could do that during a call that dragged on between 8 PM and 10 PM once. The time difference sometimes forces me to work later.

After the call, I have no energy left. I’m completely drained. I spent the rest of the day vegging out behind my screen in an apartment where daylight doesn’t come in. The worst part is I managed to go to bed late, which means I wake up later than usual the next day. I’m not feeling great.

Before going to bed the night before, I managed to quickly go over the next day’s schedule and appointment times. There’s the press event for Galeries Lafayette that I need to attend between 9:30 AM and 6 PM. The Mister France casting at 5 PM, for which I need to prepare a bit. A dinner shoot at Jugaad starting at 7 PM. I think to myself that it’s not a bad schedule. I’m lucky after all. I set up my work slots between the various appointments and then go back to my phone. I spend 2 hours on it despite myself, and wake up too late to start the day I had planned the night before. I realize it’s not the end of the world, but I try to take things step by step. I feel like I’m fighting against myself for simple, trivial tasks like making my bed, putting away clean dishes, or taking a shower. It takes me over 2 hours, with intermittent phone use that drains my energy and confidence in my ability to detach from it.

I then put on the latest episode of Mel Robbins’ podcast. I realize it’s not really relevant to me. I don’t have kids, and they’re not even out of the house where I’d feel alone. I listen anyway. Her voice gives me the energy and calm I need to tackle the most basic tasks, like tidying up my apartment. For breakfast, I skip the eggs. In my mind, I can already see the pan to clean among the dishes I’ve already struggled to put away. Instead, I eat a very hard pear. I think it’s better than an apple.

In the afternoon, I go through my three appointments. I didn’t know anyone at the Christmas press event for Galeries Lafayette, which was held at La Gaîté Lyrique. I wasn’t really in the mood to network. I made the rounds and left. I managed to work for 30 minutes for ISCEA. My sense of responsibility caught up with me. I have to answer my emails at all costs. I then get ready for the Mister France casting. I make sure to gather everything I need in my black bag. I look up more about the beauty contest on the website. I write down what I’d like to say in a Word document as ideas come to me: my motivations, the meaning of my approach, my presentation, what makes me different. I also research Île-de-France to get an idea of the number of departments, the population, comparative figures, and the cultural heritage I might reference. To represent the region, you have to know it, so I figured it was essential to inform myself.

The casting went relatively well, in my opinion. I should find out today whether I’ll be moving on to the Île-de-France final. Something tells me I’m more suited for beauty pageants like this than for fashion and modeling. I’ve often been told that I come across as too commercial. Maybe I’ve just been in the wrong field up until now. What I really enjoy is the work of representation: embodying an idea, setting an example, inspiring the “ideal man,” as the pageant puts it. Xavier, the casting director, used the phrase “a well-made head in a well-made body” to describe the overall package needed to represent this ideal. It’s not just about beauty. It’s also about social commitment and leadership. To me, it’s about using the image to serve the message. That’s when I’m caught off guard.

“Have you thought about an organization you’d like to be involved with?” asks Harbbel, the second member of the casting jury.

I admit that I haven’t.

“It would be good to find an organization if you’re selected to move forward,” Xavier explains.

⏤ I’m open to your recommendations. I’m not sure what kind of organization would suit me. I work a lot on creating content to inspire others to be a healthier version of themselves and to share my good habits to show a possible path they can follow.

⏤ Last time, you talked about self-care, Harbbel notes.

⏤ Yes! I really believe that to improve what’s around us, there’s a lot we can do on our own. That’s my angle. But I’m not sure what kind of organization could represent that.

⏤ You’ll need to find one.

There was a lot of kindness in those words, even though they might have seemed demanding. After the interview, I head back outside to meet Douglas. Douglas is the second candidate invited to the casting that Wednesday. Friendly and very nice, he was finishing up the paperwork. A little later, we were both invited to walk, first dressed, then in swimwear.

Back home, I don’t have much downtime before heading to the restaurant Hemblem invited me to for an influencer dinner. The evening was very pleasant. I met Nisrine, my table neighbor, Laureen from Hemblem, and Safa, who was sitting across from me. I think I really enjoy these kinds of evenings, filled with ideas and projects to promote restaurants and brands.

Back home a little before midnight, I realize that my work with ISCEA in strategic partnerships suits me quite well. I really enjoy business development through networking. Maybe it’s just not the field I’m most passionate about, like supply chain. I reflect that you can’t always get what you want. I’m already incredibly lucky. You also have to work hard. I should focus on building my discipline and good work habits. And with that thought, I end up going to bed far too late, once again.

I woke up in Strasbourg this morning. I finally managed to fall asleep properly about half an hour after taking a melatonin tablet around 3 a.m. The hostel reception calmly assigned me a new room once I suggested the obvious solution. I was surprised they didn’t have any earplugs for sale when I showed up wearing a pajama top and the baggy jeans from the day before, which I’d thrown on just for appearances.

“There’s a guy snoring in the room, and I can’t sleep,” I managed to say, half-awake.

— Have you tried earphones? he asked.

— Yeah, that’s not working. You wouldn’t happen to have earplugs or something, would you? I replied, expecting this to be such a common issue that they’d definitely have some.

— No, unfortunately not. I don’t have anything for you.

There was an awkward pause. I couldn’t react. I was exhausted but now undeniably awake. I’d already spent a few hours battling the sound of my neighbor snoring above me. I had gone to bed early, hoping to catch the 7:15 a.m. train back to Paris and write at dawn on the train.

By 1 a.m., I found the energy to rummage through the front pocket of my black Eastpak, where I always keep my earphones. Of course, I hadn’t invested in noise-canceling AirPods, and at that moment, I thought it might be worth it. I shoved them in my ears anyway and started scrolling through Spotify to see what anti-snoring playlists were out there. To my relief, I discovered that some people had anticipated this problem. I came across a whole bunch of “anti-snoring” playlists—10-hour-long ones to help you survive the whole night. Some with rain sounds, others that mimicked an airplane cabin, something about 145 GHz, which I didn’t really understand. I thought I might’ve found a solution. I tried the rain sound—useless. Then I tried the airplane cabin—it was better, but the volume was way too loud. The earphones started bothering me since I sleep curled up, face pressed against the pillow. I decided to take them out. I didn’t realize my phone was still playing the airplane cabin decompression sound. What I did notice, though, was that my Lebanese roommate, who I had caught stark naked a few hours earlier, was breathing particularly loudly.

“Do you know who it is?” asked the receptionist.

— No, I haven’t really talked to them, I replied, coming back to my senses.

— Because we could try to avoid this for the next guests. Do you know when he arrived? he explained.

At this point, I was fully awake, and I surprised myself with the effort I put into trying to figure out who the snorer was.

— Not really, I was already in bed. But when I got there, I met a 17-year-old Lebanese guy, whose brother works at reception. Then a French guy arrived, but he didn’t leave his stuff—he said he’d be back. He just wanted to know where the bathrooms were. I told him they were in the room’s bathroom. Then he left, probably to meet some friends. Then the snorer went to bed while I was already lying down, eyes closed for at least an hour. I noticed him because he made some noise climbing into the top bunk. He was… pretty big.

To avoid saying “fat,” I corrected myself mentally—better to be careful with that.

The receptionist was glued to his screen.

— Yeah, I know who it is then.

— It’s a shame, I’m only staying tonight, I’m catching my train tomorrow morning. Is there another room available? I asked, in a kind, almost pleading voice. I was surprised by my own boldness and thought I had been pretty brave to ask.

— The thing is, I’ve already closed out the accounts for the night, but let me check.

After a moment, he gave me room 306A and kindly asked me to return the keys to 302C once I’d grabbed my stuff. I climbed the three floors separating us, hurriedly packed my two bags, throwing everything in randomly, and set off to check out the new room. To my surprise, it was empty. At the same time, I figured they wouldn’t have risked putting me in another room with potential snorers. I hadn’t expected this much, and I was thrilled to see that the room was much more spacious and even had the only balcony on the floor. A four-bed room, all to myself. Excited, I went back downstairs to reception.

— Thanks so much! I said, handing him the key to 302C.

— Have a good night!

I returned to my room. I couldn’t sleep. All that commotion had completely woken me up. I started thinking, I really need to stop being so frugal about everything. I’m making good money now, and quite a bit, too. As my paternal grandparents always said: “Cheap things end up costing more.”

I think about all this as I try to fall asleep. Saving money is something I inherited from my mom. About two years ago, I nicknamed her “Mama Squirrel.” And me? I’m Baby Squirrel.

Six hours earlier, I had her on the phone to explain my latest mishap:

“Guess who made the same mistake as Mama Squirrel!” I announced, with undisguised pride, knowing she’d see it as a virtue where others might see it as a flaw.

— What happened? she asked, worried.  

— Guess where I am.  

— I’ll check your stories.  

— No, it’s not on my stories. I’m in Strasbourg.  

— Why?  

— I did the same thing as you. I took a FlixBus to go from Mannheim to Strasbourg with a 25-minute connection, and the bus was over an hour late. I missed my train. Since there weren’t any other TGVs covered by my TGV Max Jeune pass, I have to spend the night in Strasbourg. Serves me right.

Mama Squirrel had gotten herself into far worse situations in the name of saving money, which usually ended up costing her more. When she came to visit me in Bremen, where I was doing my final internship at a communications agency, she booked a bus from Grenoble to Freiburg. Needless to say, she arrived way too late to catch the ICE (Germany’s high-speed train), and the only reasonable option left was to get the Deutschland Ticket (basically a better version of a rail pass), which meant taking no fewer than eight different trains, with seven transfers, to reach me, all while running on very little sleep.

“The worst part was that huge suitcase,” she said.

On top of all that, she had lugged along a moving suitcase full of my things that I’d asked her to bring.

Lying in the clean sheets of my second bed of the night, I reflect on how I need to handle things differently. Something like this can’t happen again. I can’t afford to waste energy on things like this. What was I thinking, not taking the direct Mannheim-Paris TGV that would’ve only taken three hours?

At that moment, I start visualizing all the things I want to change, and the direction I want to head, in the journal I keep. I tell myself, the more I write in it, the more I’ll review my goals, and the fewer mistakes I’ll repeat. This is how I manage to change things. I make lists—a bunch of them—to help make my visualizations more concrete. It’s the only way I’ve found to really pay attention to my good and bad habits. I use writing to imagine a different scenario. One where I make better decisions, for the better.

Then it hits me: I’m not going to fall asleep that easily. I’d left the window open to let in the fresh air, but I’d definitely forgotten something in my previous room. My black sleep mask, the one that protects me from the harsh streetlamp rays coming through the window faster than the air. Since I’d already returned the key to 302C, I gave up. I opened up ChatGPT to check how long it takes melatonin to kick in, and once I was satisfied with the answer, I shook the plastic box and let a tiny melatonin pill fall out. I took a sip of water and forced myself to appreciate the silence in the room as I tried to fall asleep.

This Monday morning, I woke up at Romy’s place in Mannheim. Fabian had already left, so I finally got to sleep in a proper bed. I slept much better, and I also went to bed way earlier.

When we finally managed to leave the apartment on Sunday morning, around 1 p.m., we headed towards the Wasserturm, which is Mannheim’s water tower. It’s basically the city’s main landmark, just like the Eiffel Tower is for Paris. I suggested we stop at the Starbucks in front of it, but Romy insisted there was a better café on the other side, called Dolce Amaro. We ordered two Americanos, and I pulled out my journal to start writing, realizing it was high time I got back to it this week.

Lately, I’ve been focusing a lot on writing for my website, sometimes at the expense of my actual work and other habits. I like to see this as a “phase.” I’ve had my piano phase, my gym phase, my Instagram phase, so why not a writing phase? The fact that I call it a phase is because I know, or at least assume, it won’t last forever. It’s almost discouraging sometimes to start something with the idea that it has to be permanent. Better to just give up than to impose that on yourself, right?

For me, I usually start something to try something new. Then, I’ll figure out whether it’s worth continuing, knowing full well that it’s often when you keep going, while others quit, that you get different results.

Romy and I were actually talking about this the other day. She’s been wanting to start a podcast for a while now. Same here, actually, but the difference is, she recorded her first episode yesterday—with me as the guest. The podcast is going to be called “Ungefiltert,” which is German for “unfiltered.” It’s a podcast with no editing or prep, just pure natural conversations. I can confirm it lacked structure, which is what I told Romy when I shared some examples of the podcasts I listen to. We’ll see if she takes that feedback on board. In any case, I didn’t think I came off too bad in the recording, and the vibe was good enough that the first episode should be usable.

The recording lasted 38 minutes. Romy was happy with the result. Of course, I had some notes, but honestly, my mind was more on the Korean restaurant we’d booked a table at after we left Dolce Amaro. As we were walking there, Romy explained that the podcast would just be a hobby, nothing too serious. I pointed out that if she approached it like that, it would definitely stay that way—a hobby that never really takes off.

She was probably trying to lower the stakes so she’d feel more comfortable. It’s scary starting something new, especially when you’re not sure if you’ll be any good at it. But does that mean you shouldn’t have ambitious goals?

I’m not sure if she particularly likes it when I challenge her like this. She often says, “I can only do this kind of stuff with you!”—referring to the photos, videos, crazy plans, parties, and now podcasts that we do together. I think she sees it as a positive thing, that I try to push her out of her comfort zone. From my side, I just don’t hold back from sharing my frustrations with her, hoping she’ll change a bit.

What’s nice, though, is that she’s pretty open to my suggestions. As we were leaving to go to the restaurant, I proposed:

“How about we leave our phones here? We’ll bring two books, and after dinner, we’ll find a café and just read for an hour. It’s only an hour, right?”

She said yes. I have to say, phones really annoy me. I’m not sure if it’s because I spend too much time on mine, and I see my own flaw in her, or if it’s because I’m afraid that seeing her on hers will make me want to hide behind a screen too.

What’s funny is that she’s aware of it herself. During the podcast recording, she mentioned how much time we waste on our phones. I chimed in, saying the best way to gain more time is to ask yourself: what’s the one activity that eats up most of my time that I really should cut back on? “Ungefiltert” turned into a self-help podcast, probably because I wanted to add my two cents.

As I’m writing this on Monday morning, Romy is sitting next to me, going over the podcast clips she’s editing on CapCut.

Anyway, we went to the restaurant without our phones, no pictures of our food, no responding to messages that could wait. Since we’d made an “early-bird” reservation at 6 p.m. (very German), we were staring at our empty plates by 7 p.m. I announced it was time for part two of my plan: reading.

At the Starbucks across from the Wasserturm, I went to the counter to order while telling Romy to stay put in the prime seating with the best view of the water tower. I would’ve been really annoyed if I had to sit somewhere less nice to read. I ordered the only hot drink available without caffeine—mint tea—which the barista served in the usual paper cups. I asked for real mugs for a bit more class, then hurried back to make sure our seats were still free.

We settled into the comfiest low chairs Starbucks had to offer, though I still had this persistent back pain. Since I started taking Imraldi injections every three weeks for my ankylosing spondylitis, I’ve probably lost track of the schedule. I’m pretty sure I’m overdue for a shot, and I told Romy that’s probably why my stomach and back were hurting all Sunday. Then I declared it was time to read, and Romy got to it. She pulled out the German book she’d recommended to me from her shelf, while she herself grabbed a feminist book that she couldn’t quite get into—due to both a lack of interest and the clattering of cups around us. After an hour, as we were leaving Starbucks, she told me she couldn’t handle the noise anymore from the cleaning and tidying up before closing. For once, she was the one who was irritated.

I’d finished “L’impossible retour”, the latest Amélie Nothomb book, on my way to Munich. Romy had suggested “Das Café am Rande der Welt” by John Strelecky as we packed up to head out a few hours earlier. It’s originally an English book called “The Why Café”.

Maybe it’s not always the case, but in my experience, English books tend to be written more simply. There are rarely long, complicated sentences. The translation into German made it even easier to read. My best experience with this was reading « The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck » by Mark Manson. Reading it in French was so refreshing. No French author writes like that—with humor, a bit of slang, self-deprecation. Anyway, as I got into my hour of reading, much to Romy’s despair because she couldn’t focus, I rediscovered the simplicity of American writing—this time through German.

48 pages later, Romy pointed out for the third time that it was almost 8 p.m. I told her, firmly, that we’d leave when it was exactly 8. She kept staring into space until we finally left. Under the streetlights and the setting sun at the end of Planken street, we headed home to get to bed early and start the week right.

Ich bin heute in Mannheim. Gestern habe ich mich von Marco und Frederic in München verabschiedet und bin weiter nach Mannheim gefahren, was ja quasi auf dem Rückweg nach Paris liegt. Aber warum Mannheim? Mannheim ist die Stadt, in der ich damals studiert habe. Nach meinem französischen Abi habe ich mir ein paar Studiengänge überlegt, bei denen ich meine Deutschkenntnisse weiterentwickeln könnte. Klar, ich hatte mehrere Universitäten im Kopf, aber am Ende wollte nur eine mich wirklich haben. Zum Glück war das keine schlechte Wahl. Zugegeben, ich habe mich auch nur bei ziemlich wettbewerbsstarken Studiengängen beworben.

Drei Jahre zuvor, als ich an die Internationale Schule in Grenoble kam, fand ich mich in einer deutschen Klasse– umgeben von Leuten, die meiner Meinung nach schon fließend Deutsch sprachen. Das war natürlich nicht der Fall, ich war nur schlechter als sie. Und nach der B2-C1-Prüfung, die wir alle machen mussten, war ich, objektiv betrachtet, tatsächlich der Schlechteste. Ich war nicht gerade stolz darauf, der Einzige zu sein, der die Prüfung nicht bestanden hatte.

„Ich habe gute Nachrichten für euch! Ihr habt alle die B2-C1-Prüfung bestanden! Nur einer hat es nicht geschafft, aber er weiß es schon.“ So verkündete es Frau Schaeffer vor der ganzen Klasse.

Wer hätte damals gedacht, dass ich heute hier sitze und nun auf Deutsch schreibe? Ich zumindest nicht.

Gerade bin ich bei Romy zu Hause in Mannheim. Es fühlt sich hier fast wie ein zweites Zuhause an, nicht nur, weil sie seit 2018 immer noch dieselbe Wohnung in Mannheim hat, sondern auch, weil ich hier schon so oft übernachtet habe. Romys „Wohnung-Starter-Pack“ umfasst Alexa, die in der Küche Popmusik abspielt, dimmbare Lichter und abends Kerzen, jede Menge Pflanzen und einen Staubsauger-Roboter, der meiner Meinung nach nicht so wirklich funktioniert. Mehr brauche ich nicht, um mich wohlzufühlen. Außerdem wohnt sie super zentral, und die Wohnung hat viel Licht – das ist auch ein echter Pluspunkt. Damals habe ich immer die Fitness-First-Karte von ihrem Bruder Philip ausgeliehen, damit wir mit Romy gemeinsam die Sauna und das kleine Schwimmbad im Q7 genießen konnten. Sport haben wir da nie gemacht, für uns war Entspannung wichtiger.

Im Sommer 2017 habe ich auch oft eine Sauna in Deutschland genossen. Allerdings nicht in Mannheim, sondern in Nebel auf Amrum. Als mein Vater in Aix-en-Provence studierte, hatte er einen coolen deutschen Kumpel, mit dem er alles unternahm. So ähnlich wie Romy und ich, nur dass mein Vater dadurch nie Deutsch gelernt hat. Mittlerweile spreche ich mit Romy fast nur noch Deutsch. Der coole deutsche Kumpel meines Vaters hieß übrigens Philipp. Heute ist er Geschäftsführer in Hamburg, hat vier Kinder und eine Frau.

Als ich meinen Eltern sagte, dass ich mein Deutsch verbessern wollte, haben sie sofort an Philipp gedacht. Sie schrieben ihm eine E-Mail, und im nächsten Sommer war ich auf Amrum. Mein Vater hatte zuvor Rosetta Stone illegal auf meinen Laptop geladen, und ich habe versucht, ein bisschen was zu lernen. Aber so richtig angefangen habe ich erst auf Amrum. Ich habe den Kurs tatsächlich bis zum Ende durchgezogen. Naja, am Ende habe ich nur noch die Aussprache-Übungen gemacht, weil es sonst zu lange gedauert hätte, auch noch das Schreiben und die Grammatik für jedes Niveau zu üben. Zum Glück sind Schreiben und Grammatik heute mit ChatGPT nicht mehr so wichtig. Vokabeln zu kennen und sich gut ausdrücken zu können, ist viel entscheidender.

Im Nachhinein war es eine gute Idee, dass ich mich so stark auf die Aussprache fokussiert habe. Ich wollte unbedingt das gesamte Vokabular einmal durchgehen, richtig aussprechen und wiederholen. Man vergisst schnell, wie viel man beim Sprachenlernen wiederholen muss, um Fortschritte zu machen. Egal ob es um Satzstrukturen geht – man muss alles so oft wiederholen, bis die Worte, Gedanken und die Aussprache zu einem Teil von einem werden.

Ich lag oft nach der Sauna im Keller, machte meine Rosetta-Stone-Übungen, hörte die Satzstrukturen an und wiederholte sie, während ich mir die schönen Bilder anschaute. Auf dem riesigen Laptop meiner Mutter sah das schon beeindruckend aus. Solche großen Laptops gibt’s heute nicht mehr. Er war allerdings auch echt schwer. Meine Freunde in Mannheim nannten ihn „das Monster“. Zum Glück habe ich ihn mittlerweile gegen ein MacBook Air eingetauscht, mit dem ich gerade diese Zeilen tippe.

Das war auf jeden Fall eine besondere Zeit: Nebel, Amrum, das „Monster“, Rosetta Stone, 17 Jahre alt, Gasteltern, mit denen ich ordentlich Eierlikör mit Vanilleeis essen und tollen Wein im Restaurant probieren konnte. Meine Eltern waren nicht dabei. Sie kamen erst in der letzten Woche des Sommers mit meinem Bruder und meiner Schwester, und bis dahin war mein Deutsch schon ziemlich flüssig. Es war beeindruckend, wie viel Fortschritt ich in so kurzer Zeit gemacht hatte.

Im September 2017, zurück an der Internationalen Schule in Grenoble, war mein Deutsch-Niveau plötzlich besser als das meiner Mitschüler. Es war nun hoch genug, um es nicht so leicht wieder zu verlieren. Ein paar Monate später habe ich dann tatsächlich das B2-C1-Diplom bestanden. Es war auch mein letztes Schuljahr vor dem Abi, und die Zeit, in der wir uns für Universitäten beworben haben. Mir wurde klar, dass Deutsch das Einzige war, was mich wirklich von den anderen abhob. Deutsch gilt in Frankreich ein bisschen als Elitesprache. Die meisten Schüler wählen lieber Spanisch, weil es einfacher ist und sie so bessere Noten bekommen, um sich eine „Mention Très Bien“ (1,0) im Abi zu sichern. Die, die Deutsch wählen, sind oft von ehrgeizigen Eltern gedrängt worden, um in einer besseren Klasse zu landen. Meine Eltern hatten für mich noch ein anderes Argument: „Du sprichst doch Englisch, das ist fast so nah an Deutsch, wie Französisch an Spanisch!“ Das war natürlich eine große Lüge.

Aber ich sage oft, dass meine Fähigkeit, Deutsch gut auszusprechen, vielleicht daher kommt, dass ich schon mit drei Jahren Französisch zu Hause, Englisch in der Schule und mit meinen Freunden sprach, und sogar ein paar Wörter auf Thai aussprechen konnte. Ich glaube wirklich, dass diese früh entwickelte Aussprachevielfalt mir hilft, die Betonungen in verschiedenen Sprachen zu erkennen und richtig auszusprechen.

2018 wurde ich an der Universität Paris-Dauphine angenommen und entschied mich für den deutsch-französischen Studiengang. Innerhalb von drei Jahren würde ich drei Semester in Mannheim studieren, bevor ich zur Mitte des zweiten Jahres nach Paris umziehen würde, um dort die letzten drei Semester zu absolvieren. Alle Vorlesungen waren auf Englisch, aber das Studium war dual, also eine Art Doppeldiplom in internationaler BWL zwischen der Dauphine-Universität in Paris und der DHBW in Mannheim.

Für den Unternehmensanteil des Studiums habe ich mir ein deutsches Unternehmen gesucht. Das war in Bochum. Alle drei Monate hatte ich also auch eine neue Wohnung in Bochum für die Praxisphasen. Das ständige Hin- und Herreisen war zwar anstrengend, aber wenn ich mich nicht für ein deutsches Unternehmen entschieden hätte, das mich auch haben wollte, würde ich heute nicht so gut Deutsch sprechen.

Jetzt bin ich in Mannheim, wo ich damals studiert und gelebt habe. Romy hat natürlich entspannte Musik laufen, und draußen regnet es ordentlich. Wir haben beschlossen, erst einen Spaziergang zu machen, anstatt den Sonntag schon früh morgens mit einem Film zu beginnen. Fabian, Romys Freund, ist auch da. Er beschäftigt sich gerade mit den Puzzleteilen, die Romy auf dem Tisch ausgebreitet hat. Romy meinte, das hilft ihr, den Kopf freizubekommen. Gerade ist sie aber mit ihrem Handy beschäftigt, und das Buch, das halb offen auf ihrem Schoß liegt, konnte sie auch nicht wirklich davon abhalten.

Romy und ich sind uns da ziemlich ähnlich. Manchmal sind wir präsent, ohne wirklich da zu sein. Wir können zusammen sein, ohne viel zu reden. Wir unterhalten uns, auch wenn wir beide wissen, dass wir nicht wirklich zuhören. Aber das ist okay. Wir wissen das und nehmen es nicht übel. Das ist auch das Schöne daran. Alles ist easy. Ich mache eben gerade mein eigenes Ding – ich schreibe.

Damals habe ich im CSH in Mannheim gewohnt, dem Curt-Sanding-Haus, einem ziemlich internationalen Studentenwohnheim. Es gibt das Gebäude aber nicht mehr, es wurde abgerissen. Ich habe es nicht miterlebt, aber wenn ich daran denke, überkommt mich schon ein bisschen Nostalgie. Ich werde nie wieder mein Zimmer im siebten Stock besuchen können. Die Leute, die dort damals wohnten, sind natürlich längst weg. Ich habe oft aus dem Fenster geschaut, auf die Autobahn, und über mein Leben nachgedacht, besonders abends, wenn die Straßenlaternen angingen.

Montagabend fahre ich zurück nach Paris. Wir machen am Montag noch einen Coworking-Tag bei Romy zu Hause, und abends geht’s dann los. Mannheim ist viel näher an Paris als München. Es gibt einen direkten Zug von Mannheim nach Paris, der nur drei Stunden braucht. Romy war gefühlt öfter spontan bei mir in Paris als ich bei ihr in Mannheim, aber wir wissen, dass es immer spontan klappen kann. Diesmal habe ich ihr am Tag vorher Bescheid gesagt, dass ich nach Mannheim komme.

Sie hat mich mit ihrem Mini-Cabrio abgeholt, laut Popmusik an und gute Laune, und wir sind am Wasserturm vorbei Richtung Innenstadt gefahren, wo sie wohnt. Obwohl ich schon ziemlich kaputt war, habe ich mich abends noch aufgerafft, um ein Bananenweizen zu trinken und mich vom Alkohol dazu überreden zu lassen, dass wir doch noch ins Hafer 49 gehen konnten, wo Romy uns Plätze auf der Gästeliste organisiert hatte.

Als ich ein bisschen angetrunken war, fühlte ich mich viel besser, obwohl ich keine Ahnung hatte, was ich dort eigentlich sollte. Ich bin kein großer Tänzer, und es gab auch niemanden, mit dem ich die Nacht verbringen wollte. Die Stimmung war trotzdem gut, besonders, als wir uns von der Menge zurückzogen und uns in die Strandkörbe am Ufer des Verbindungskanals am Neckar setzten.

Sobald ich saß, war es wirklich angenehm, und Pam, Romys Freundin, die als Videografin arbeitet und uns auf die Gästeliste gesetzt hatte, kam auch noch zu uns. Es war schön, mit ihr zu quatschen, aber noch schöner war es, als wir um 22 Uhr nach Hause liefen und auf dem Rückweg im Jungbusch-Viertel bei Chef Döner einen Kalbfleisch-Döner mitnahmen.

Zu Hause hat Romy uns dann Tiramisu serviert, das sie extra vor meiner Ankunft vorbereitet hatte. Sie war stolz darauf, das Schoko-Tiramisu-Rezept ausprobiert zu haben, dass ich ihr letztes Mal per WhatsApp geschickt hatte. Fabian kam auch noch dazu. Wir haben uns alle 2018 in Mannheim im Doppelabschlussprogramm kennengelernt. Später habe ich ziemlich gut auf Romys neuem, dunkelgrünen Vintage-Sofa geschlafen.

„Was hat sich seit letztem Jahr verändert?“

In dem Moment dachte ich nur: „Was soll ich darauf antworten?“ So viel hat sich ja nun auch nicht verändert. Ich war jedenfalls nicht auf diese Frage vorbereitet. Ich dachte mir: „Diesmal gehe ich einfach hin und lasse alles auf mich zukommen.“ Vielleicht war das nicht die beste Strategie. Jedenfalls habe ich dann sowas gesagt wie:

„Ich habe mein Studium abgeschlossen. Mein Praktikum, das ich damals in Bremen gemacht habe, ist auch vorbei. Jetzt arbeite ich freiberuflich und habe mehr Zeit zum Modeln. Ich stehe inzwischen bei drei Agenturen unter Vertrag.“

Das war’s dann auch. Sie wollte nicht wirklich mehr über mich wissen. Nachdem der Nächste dran war, fiel mir plötzlich ein, dass sich mein Look ja total verändert hat. Letztes Jahr beim Vorcasting hatte ich noch weiße Haare. Ich habe damals in Bremen gewohnt und wollte meine Haare selbst blondieren, was richtig schiefging. Am Ende musste ich zu Gully & Pierre für eine Rettungsaktion. Innerhalb von ein paar schmerzhaften Stunden bin ich vom Pissgelb zu gebleichten Haaren gewechselt. Es war das erste Mal, dass ich diesen Influencer-Friseur ausprobiert habe, und ich muss sagen, das Ergebnis war echt cool. Es gab aber auch nicht viele andere Optionen nach meinem Missgeschick. Der Look kam in Berlin gut an, und Heidi meinte sogar: „Cooler Look!“ Würde sie sich freuen, dass meine Haare jetzt fast wieder natürlich sind? Oder, dass sie länger geworden sind? Ein Grund mehr, sie beim Umstyling zu schneiden! Wahrscheinlich ist es ihr aber relativ egal. Am Ende zählt der Eindruck im Moment.

Letztes Jahr bin ich in Berlin nicht weitergekommen bei GNTM 2024. Gestern wurde ich auch beim Vorcasting in München nicht zum nächsten Schritt in Berlin eingeladen. Was hat sich geändert? Viel und doch nicht so viel.

Feedback bekommt man in der Modelwelt ja eher selten. So läuft es halt. Vielleicht hätte ich in dem Moment nach Feedback fragen können, aber es gibt ja Regeln. Man lässt die Jury sprechen, und wenn die Entscheidung fällt, kann man vielleicht noch was sagen.

Ich war die Erste von der vierten Gruppe, die sprechen durfte. So läuft das Casting ab: Man kommt zum Hauptsitz von ProSieben, entweder Anfang August oder, wie ich dieses Jahr, Anfang September, und wartet erst mal viel. Vorher musste man alle Dokumente, die man per E-Mail erhalten hat, ausdrucken und unterschreiben. Dann geht’s ins Gebäude und man durchläuft eine Sicherheitskontrolle, die ein bisschen wie am Flughafen ist, nur nicht so streng. In der Schlange habe ich Benedict vom letzten Jahr wiedererkannt! Er war auch in Berlin und kommt aus München. Ich habe mich total gefreut, ihn zu sehen, denn meine Aufregung hat sich dadurch etwas gelegt. Wir haben uns begrüßt und ein paar Worte ausgetauscht. Später, als wir länger warten mussten, haben wir schnell mit anderen gesprochen, die um uns herum standen.

Es ist schon cool, mit so vielen Models in einem Raum zu sein. Die meisten sind echt locker und nett – ganz normale Leute. Wir alle haben dasselbe Ziel. Einer kam sogar aus Griechenland und hieß Nikodimo, ein Name, den er noch bei niemand anderem gehört hatte. Die Leute waren natürlich überrascht, dass ich aus Paris komme. Noch mehr erstaunt waren sie, als ich erklärte, dass ich keine deutschen Eltern habe. „Du sprichst aber gut Deutsch!“. Ich erkläre dann immer, dass mein schwacher französischer Akzent, den man oft gar nicht bemerkt, wahrscheinlich daher kommt, dass ich so lange auf eine amerikanische Schule gegangen bin, weil ich in Thailand aufgewachsen bin. Ich dachte mir, das hebt mich vielleicht von den anderen ab.

Aber ist das wirklich ein Vorteil? Beim Casting in Berlin letztes Jahr wollte ich Heidi genau das erklären – als ob sie das nicht schon aus meiner Bewerbung und den Videos wusste – und ich war vor Aufregung völlig durcheinander. Erstens hatte ich vergessen, dass sie es sowieso weiß, und zweitens wollte ich eine große Story erzählen, obwohl man dafür überhaupt keine Zeit hat.

Wie auch immer, ich glaube, dieses Jahr kam das nicht so gut an. Schließlich geht’s hier um Germany’s Next Topmodel. Schon zu Hause in München, wo ich bei Freunden meiner Familie übernachtet habe, meinte Marko, nachdem ich rausgeflogen war: „Das hättest du so nicht sagen sollen – oder zumindest anders formulieren.“ 

Er meinte, ich hätte den Fokus in meiner unvorbereiteten Vorstellung zu sehr auf meine französische Herkunft und mein Leben in Paris gelegt. Welchen Vorteil hat das überhaupt? Germany’s Next Topmodel ist eine Sendung, in der „Germany“ klar im Vordergrund steht. Marko sagte: „Du hättest erwähnen können, dass es sowas in Frankreich gar nicht gibt und dass du so viel gereist bist, um hier teilzunehmen, und dass du es wieder tun würdest.“

Mir war es echt peinlich, nochmal darüber nachzudenken. Ich mag es nicht, wenn ich merke, wie arrogant ich manchmal wirken kann. So war es nicht gemeint, aber es kam halt so rüber. Ich war noch total müde von der Reise und dachte, ich hätte mich nicht so schlecht geschlagen. Ich glaube, wenn sie mich wirklich gewollt hätten, hätten sie mich genommen. Vielleicht lag es auch daran, dass ich meine Bewerbung fast vergessen hatte und deshalb in der Vorcasting-Runde im September statt im August war. Sie haben vorher schon so viele gute Leute gesehen. Warum noch einen arroganten Franzosen, der erklärt, dass er Franzose ist, obwohl sie das eh schon wissen?

Zurück zum Vorcasting in München. Wir waren alle im Slot 3, dem letzten des Tages, der sich von 16:00 bis 21:00 Uhr ziehen kann. Wir saßen an den runden Tischen im großen Raum und warteten. Didier, der Casting-Direktor, kam raus und erklärte uns, wie der Ablauf sein würde. Erst die Anmeldung, dann werden wir in Gruppen zu viert aufgeteilt. Didier holte immer mal wieder die nächste Gruppe, und die danach wusste schon, dass sie sich vorbereiten sollte. Ich war fast am Ende dran, mit Timo, Matze und einem coolen Typen, dessen Namen ich nicht mehr weiß. Vielleicht war ich in dem Moment zu sehr auf mich selbst fokussiert. Timo erzählte, dass er mal Schauspieler war und Schwierigkeiten hatte, aus dieser Rolle rauszukommen. Er hatte in einer mittelmäßig bekannten deutschen Serie gespielt, deren Namen ich mir natürlich nicht merken konnte. Sein Traum war es aber immer, Model zu sein. Er war auch letztes Jahr in Berlin. Matze war irgendwie die ganze Zeit über ziemlich nervös, fand ich. In seiner Vorstellung vor der Jury erwähnte er, dass er eine Krankheit hatte, die man an seinem Hals erkennen könne, was ich vorher nicht bemerkt hatte. Und der coole Typ kam gefühlt eine Stunde zu spät zum Casting. Er war am selben Tag mit dem Flixbus aus Berlin angereist und hatte Verspätung. Zum Glück wurde er noch in eine der späteren Gruppen eingeteilt.

Wir standen alle in einem neuen Raum und durften auf die Stühle setzen. Wir konnten schon die Leute sehen, die weitergekommen waren – sie saßen entspannt auf den Stühlen neben der Kaffeemaschine. Dort war ich letztes Jahr auch. Man wartet einfach, bis man aufgerufen wird, um ein cooles Video im Studio mit dem großen weißen Hintergrund zu drehen, bevor man das wohl aufregendste Interview seines Lebens führt. Bei mir wurde das natürlich nie im TV gezeigt. Nur die paar Flips, die ich vor Heidi gemacht habe, sind ausgestrahlt worden. Laut Fernseher habe ich nicht mal gesprochen, was natürlich nicht stimmt. Ich rede so viel, dass man eher sagen könnte, ich labere gern. Letztes Jahr habe ich für das Interview sogar extra ein Hemd angezogen, um schlauer auszusehen. Ich dachte, das würde Eindruck machen. Aber im TV war dann offenbar der Handstand interessanter.

Didier kommt zu uns Vieren und erklärt, was als Nächstes passiert: „Ihr werdet hier in einer Reihe stehen, und wenn die Musik anfängt, dürft ihr euch nach meinem Signal auf das rote Kreuz vor die Jury stellen.“

Ob er erwähnt hat, dass wir uns vorstellen sollten, weiß ich nicht mehr. Letztes Jahr war das irgendwie ganz natürlich, weil der Typ, der mir damals die Fragen gestellt hat, sofort meinte: „Du strahlst! Woher kommt das?“ Keine Ahnung, was ich geantwortet habe, aber es hatte auf jeden Fall seinen Effekt. Nach ein paar weiteren Fragen, auf die ich mit einem breiten Grinsen geantwortet habe, wurde ich zum Polaroid-Set hinter uns geschickt, um Fotos zu machen. Ein gutes Zeichen!

Dieses Jahr war es keine Frage nach meiner Ausstrahlung. Stattdessen hieß es einfach: „Du warst schon letztes Jahr hier.“ Das klang nicht gerade begeistert.

Dann fragte die Jurorin ziemlich gehetzt: „Wer möchte anfangen?“ 

Ich sagte sofort: „Sure! Ich kann anfangen.“ Als ob ich nicht auch „gerne“ hätte sagen können. Dann wartete ich. Sie schaute mich an und meinte: „Fang doch einfach an, stell dich vor!“ 

Da fiel mir ein, dass ich mich ja vorstellen sollte. Aber sie kennt mich doch schon, oder? Also fing ich an zu labern: „Ich bin Léopold, ich bin Franzose, lebe inzwischen in Paris, aber ich spreche Deutsch, nicht wegen meiner Eltern…“ Ich höre hier besser auf. In echt habe ich weiter geredet, aber es ist mir gerade zu peinlich, das alles aufzuschreiben. Was für ein eingebildeter Typ war ich an dem Tag? Es kam jedenfalls nicht besonders gut an. Meine letzte Frage war: „Was hat sich seit letztem Jahr verändert?“ Danach schien das Interesse an mir verflogen – auch das Fotoset hinter mir wurde mir nicht mehr angeboten.

Der Einzige, der viele Fragen gestellt bekam, war der coole Typ aus unserer Gruppe, dieser Schwarze mit der tiefen Stimme. Er blieb entspannt und ganz locker, vielleicht etwas ruhig, aber nicht so ruhig wie Matze. Er war der Einzige, der dann auch Fotos machen durfte. Danach wurden wir alle gebeten, den Raum zu verlassen.

Wenige Minuten später durften wir nochmal rein. Die Jurorin bedankte sich bei uns, und das war das Einzige, was ich in dem Moment wirklich verstanden habe. Wir sind rausgegangen, und ich fragte sofort: „Wir sind nicht weiter, oder?“

„Nee, sind wir nicht“, meinte Matze, etwas genervt.

In solchen Momenten bin ich oft einfach nicht wirklich da. Ich fühlte mich irgendwie fertig von der Anreise, aber ich habe nicht das Gefühl, dass ich die Chance meines Lebens verpasst habe. Bereuen tue ich es auf jeden Fall nicht. Ich bin froh, nach München gefahren zu sein. Ich habe so viele andere Projekte am Laufen, so viele coole Sachen, an denen ich arbeite, dass ich mir jetzt sage: Ich kann damit weitermachen und muss nicht alles für dieses Abenteuer auf Eis legen.

Für andere ist das natürlich nicht so. In meiner Gruppe war alles noch relativ entspannt, vielleicht ein bisschen enttäuschend für einige, aber kein Drama. Doch bei anderen gibt es oft Tränen, wenn sie erfahren, dass die Reise schon in München endet, bevor sie überhaupt richtig angefangen hat.

Vielleicht gibt es dieses Jahr wieder ein öffentliches Casting in Berlin, wie letztes Jahr. Mal sehen, wann das ist und ob ich verrückt genug bin, nochmal hinzufahren. Das wäre jedenfalls eine Gelegenheit, Berlin zu besuchen. Modeln ist manchmal wie Lotto. Manche gewinnen, manche nicht. Meistens gibt es keine richtige Erklärung. Man kann sich oft nicht wirklich verbessern, weil man so wenig beeinflussen kann. Aber wie beim Lotto gilt: Je öfter man spielt, desto höher sind die Chancen zu gewinnen. Die Chancen bleiben zwar gering, aber besser als wenn man es gar nicht versucht. So sehe ich das auch beim Modeln.

Ich weiß nicht genau, warum ich immer wieder zum Modeln zurückkehre. Ich weiß jetzt schon, dass es nicht das Einzige ist, was ich machen will. Ich glaube, was mich reizt, ist die Vorstellung, eine Spur zu hinterlassen. Wenn es mal tolle Bilder von mir gibt, an die sich die Leute erinnern, dann reicht mir das schon. Für mich ist das Modeln eine Art, wie man mich visuell wahrnehmen kann. Aber das Visuelle reicht mir nicht. Ich will, dass meine Stimme erkannt wird, die Worte, die ich wähle, wenn ich schreibe. Ich will mehr von mir mit der Welt teilen. Ich mache das alles für mich selbst, aber ich bemühe mich, dass es unterhaltsam, angenehm und vielleicht sogar hilfreich für andere ist.

Nach dem Casting in München gestern bin ich ziemlich zügig zur S-Bahn-Station in Unterföhring gelaufen und habe die nächste S8 Richtung Weißling genommen. Zuerst habe ich versucht, meine französischen Freunde zu erreichen, bei denen ich übernachte. Ohne Erfolg. Dann habe ich mein deutsches Management in Hamburg angerufen – ebenfalls ohne Erfolg. Nach einer kurzen Pause rief ich dann Ramon Wagner (itgirlagenten) an. Er ging schnell ran.

„Bist du gerade in München beim GNTM-Casting?“

„Ja, genau.“

„Aha, das hab ich mir schon gedacht. Und, wie war’s?“

Ich kenne Ramon seit ein paar Jahren. Als ich anfing, auf Instagram bekannter zu werden, folgte er mir irgendwann. Ich merkte sofort, dass er der Typ ist, der die Interviews mit den TV-Kandidaten auf YouTube macht. Ich schaue GNTM komplett durch, seitdem ich in Deutschland lebe. Damals konnte ich nicht mehr richtig turnen, und ich dachte, Model zu sein, wäre eine coole und finanziell interessante Alternative. Beim ersten Punkt hatte ich recht, beim Geld warte ich noch. Ich meine, Heidi hat mit dem Modeln ja ordentlich abgesahnt. Warum also nicht ich?

Ich konnte GNTM 2019 und 2020 problemlos in Deutschland schauen, weil ich damals noch in Deutschland lebte, studierte und arbeitete. Am 22. August 2020 schrieb ich Ramon dann:

„Ich hab schon mal deine Videos geguckt, die du mit GNTM-Models machst.“

„Haha, damit hätte ich jetzt nicht gerechnet.“

Ein paar Nachrichten später versprach er mir, mir in den kommenden Jahren alle GNTM-Folgen zu schicken. Seit 2020 hat er keine Folge verpasst, und ich konnte jede Staffel aus Frankreich anschauen, da die Sendung normalerweise nur für die DACH-Region zugänglich ist.

Am 6. September 2024, am Telefon mit Ramon:

„Was? Sie haben dich nicht genommen?“

„Nee.“

„Haben sie eine Begründung gegeben?“

„Nein, natürlich nicht. Das machen die ja nicht. Das ist normal. Aber ich war an dem Tag schon ziemlich durch. Sie haben mich gefragt, was sich seit letztem Jahr verändert hat. Und in dem Moment wurde mir klar, dass ich vielleicht gar nicht so viel Fortschritt gemacht habe.“

Diese Frage hat mir gezeigt, wo mein eigentliches Problem liegt. Ich mache so viele verschiedene Sachen, dass die Leute am Ende des Tages nicht wissen, was genau ich tue, was mir Spaß macht und was mich antreibt. Das größte Problem ist: Ich weiß es selbst nicht so genau. Genau deshalb stürze ich mich in so viele Projekte. Ich habe Schwierigkeiten, mich festzulegen, und noch mehr hasse ich es, mir einzugestehen, dass ich etwas loslassen sollte. Keine Entscheidung zu treffen, ist auch eine Entscheidung – aber selten eine gute. 

Ja, ich habe mich für Freelance-Arbeit entschieden, um mehr Zeit zum Modeln zu haben. Ich habe Instagram genutzt, um mir eine gewisse Glaubwürdigkeit als Model aufzubauen. Und ich habe bei mehreren Agenturen unterschrieben, um überhaupt modeln zu können. Aber ich habe mich nie voll und ganz hineingestürzt, weil ich Angst habe.

Ich habe Angst, zu scheitern. Ich bin unsicher. Mein Mund schließt sich nicht ganz, weil meine Zähne so groß sind und viel Platz einnehmen. Manchmal sieht das verkrampft aus. Manchmal lasse ich den Mund offen, was nicht bei jedem Shooting passt. Um den Mund geschlossen zu halten, muss ich meine Kinnmuskeln anspannen, was natürlich auch nicht ideal ist. Aber das ist nicht mal meine größte Unsicherheit. Ich finde, ich sehe immer müde aus. Die Vertiefungen unter meinen Augen sind so stark, dass ich sie auch mit intensiver Bildbearbeitung und fünf Jahren Erfahrung nicht immer kaschieren kann. Im Alltag achte ich ständig auf das Licht und denke mir oft: „Verdammt, heute ist es bewölkt, ich sehe bestimmt wieder richtig fertig aus, und man wird meine tiefen Augenringe sehen.“

Das Modeln hat mir geholfen, auf mich selbst zu achten. Mal positiv, mal eher nicht. Es hat mir geholfen, mit meinen Unsicherheiten umzugehen und sie zu überspielen. Ich habe gelernt, dass manchmal die Einstellung wichtiger ist, als man denkt, und dass man sich lieber auf seine Stärken konzentrieren sollte, statt auf die Schwächen. Ich habe gemerkt, dass man nicht unbedingt perfekt aussehen muss, um ein cooles Bild hinzubekommen. Ich habe auch gelernt, wie man mit Bearbeitung aus einem Foto etwas Krasses machen kann. 

Ich habe also viel durch das Modeln gelernt, und das hat für mich einen tiefen, intrinsischen Wert. Deshalb bleibe ich dran und gebe nicht auf. Ich weiß, dass es ein bisschen wie ein Lottospiel ist. Ich weiß aber auch, dass ich mich dafür entscheiden muss, wenn ich es wirklich ernst meine. Und ich weiß, dass ich in anderen Bereichen vielleicht mehr Potenzial habe und dort wahrscheinlich auch stärker bin. Aber der Hauptgrund, warum ich heute immer noch dabei bin, ist, dass ich Angst habe, es später im Leben nicht mehr machen zu können. Es ist entweder jetzt oder nie. Ich will meine Chance nicht verpassen. Ich will es erleben, bevor es zu spät ist.

Der Vorteil nach so einem Casting-Tag ist, dass ich immer besser weiß, was ich will, als noch zu Beginn des Tages. Ich denke dann sofort: „Es gibt doch noch andere TV-Shows in Deutschland.“ Oder: „Vielleicht kann ich diesen Artikel sogar an Freunde in der Presse weiterleiten.“ Ich habe sofort angefangen, über die nächsten Schritte nachzudenken.

Wenn ich nicht genau weiß, wohin ich will, hat es mir bisher immer geholfen, einfach etwas zu tun und es durchzuhalten. So habe ich am meisten gelernt. So habe ich die größte Klarheit gewonnen.

Was hat sich seit letztem Jahr verändert? Vielleicht nicht viel, aber hoffentlich habe ich einige sinnvolle Schritte gemacht.

In September, I wanted to do a full month of vlogs—one vlog a day. The idea was just to get back into creating content regularly. I’ve found that I work best, feel the most creative, and improve at making content when I set myself a simple consistency rule. For over a year, that was posting one post on Instagram a day. I would also post more than once a day on TikTok. That was when the platforms were growing exponentially during Covid. It was the time when I grew the most on social media—over 100k in a year on Instagram and 300k on TikTok.

I often think back to that time. I keep telling myself, “All I have to do to get back into that rhythm is just do it again.” But I don’t. Why? Maybe I don’t want it as much anymore. Maybe I’m a bit tired. Thinking about how much energy and focus it takes, I know I wouldn’t have the space to explore other things, like building a business that actually makes good money. I’m an adult now. My parents paid my rent when I was a student, but after studying for five years post-high school, they expect me to make my own way financially. Of course, they’d help me if I really needed it or had a specific project in mind, but I like being independent and earning my own money. The real question is: what balance can I find for myself that I’ll still enjoy long-term?

It’s September, the perfect time to rethink my content creation and revisit the strategies that worked for me before. One key was setting a consistent schedule; the second was having a stock of content ready. I can’t be perfect every day. There are days when I’m just not in the mood at all. Forcing myself to create on those days doesn’t work well for me—I can tell when I’m not giving it my all. Sure, it’s good practice to push through sometimes, but you can only do that for so long. The worst part is setting a regular posting goal without thinking about when it will end. I would just ignore the fact that one day, I’ll want to stop or take a break. It feels so much better when I know it’s going to be intense but for a limited time. That really helps me push through. Otherwise, I lose the sense of why I’m doing it along the way, and it’s harder to gauge if the routine was successful or not. This time, I want to set a specific time frame so that at the end, I can evaluate the results and make adjustments.

Having a stock of content helps, but it’s not everything. It keeps me consistent on busy days, but some of my content can’t really be planned ahead. The closer my content is to my actual daily life, the better it is—especially with vlogs. If I’m vlogging every day and posting at the end of the day, I can’t just fake an extra day for the times when I don’t feel like filming. Also, when I’m putting all my energy into one format, I can’t juggle too many different things at once, like filming a YouTube video. Imagine trying to film your day vertically for Instagram, then doing the same thing again in horizontal format for YouTube. You end up with no personal time at all, and in my case, I’d be thinking only about my content, unable to fully enjoy or connect with what’s happening around me.

Another challenge with vlogging is figuring out how to create content that balances what I’m comfortable sharing and what I want to keep private. It’s not just about people who might not want to appear in my videos or things I prefer not to share; there are also professional projects I can’t talk about. In modeling, for example, it’s tricky to mention castings for brands or campaigns that haven’t been released yet. There are sometimes NDAs or other details I’m not allowed to share, which makes daily content tricky. That’s when having more pre-prepared content really comes in handy.

At this point, it’s clear that finding a balance between pre-recorded content and more spontaneous, daily content is key. Now, I’m trying to figure out which video formats I want to focus on and what themes make the most sense for me.

I’ve experimented with so many things. I started out posting modeling photos on Instagram and gymnastics content on TikTok. After committing to posting every day, I added lifestyle pics and selfies on Instagram and joined in on trends on TikTok. Once I built a community and signed with Influx, we reviewed my strategy to make my content more professional, helping brands identify with me and adding more value for my followers. That’s when I started incorporating healthy recipes, workout sessions, and personal development. But after a while, I felt like I was doing too many different things. The people who liked my workout content didn’t care about my lifestyle posts. The ones who enjoyed my personal development stuff didn’t understand how the modeling fit in. And on top of that, keeping up with all the different formats was exhausting. I started by turning the recipes into occasional stories instead of full Instagram Reels. I stopped the personal development reels when I felt like I was repeating myself and began to doubt if I had the authority to talk about those things. No matter how humble I tried to be, I’d look back at that content and feel like it wasn’t as true as I thought it was at the time. It just felt off. I was embarrassed by it. That’s when I realized the best way to share my lifestyle and habits was simply to show what I do every day. So, I started vlogging, thinking it was the perfect solution. It combined everything—my life as a model, a student, cooking healthy meals, working out, and sharing personal development insights.

It was great, but by itself, it wasn’t as stockable as workout sessions. But if I start doing more workout content, I risk being labeled a fitness influencer, which isn’t ideal for working with fashion brands. I don’t have an amazing wardrobe to share either, and I never really developed a fashion format. It’s this cycle of things I could do, things I don’t see myself doing, and feeling stuck in between. I know I could technically do almost anything—I’ve proven that to myself. But the truth is, I’m still not sure what I truly want to do or how to translate that into content I enjoy creating.

If you add my desire to take acting classes to see how I can transition from modeling to acting, and my few clients as a freelancer, you start to get an idea of how overwhelmed I feel by the life I’ve chosen—and somewhat appreciate. I just don’t know what to do about it at this point. Writing, knowing I’ll publish it, pushes me to seek order and understand myself by trying to explain where I’m coming from to you. It’s the therapy I need.

I actually started content creation out of this “need” dynamic. Back in Germany, I felt isolated working in Bochum during my apprenticeship. On one side, I overused dating apps, which led me to quit them altogether. On the other side, I started creating content, which gave me a sense of human connection I desperately needed—albeit virtually. It was a healthier or at least more productive way to spend my time. During those two years, I held onto a dream: becoming famous on Instagram. I started believing it was possible because photographers, who had seen similar models succeed, told me their stories and convinced me I was just a few steps away. Tee Jott Models was a great coach. He was the one who told me not to be afraid to post a lot of shirtless content at first. That strategy worked well for a model, although at some point, I realized it wasn’t building the community I’d hoped for. The more helpful and universal advice he gave me was: “post every day.” His theory was that you can always be creative enough to post daily. The constraint triggers creativity. Need to post something today? Figure it out. What can you do? Repost a set of pictures from last month, but in black and white this time for variety. Don’t like how they look? Try cropping them! Still not satisfied? Take a selfie and share what’s happening with you right now! There’s never a valid excuse not to be creative enough.

The funny thing is, I learned to live with that rhythm. I craved attention. I craved engagement. I needed to feel loved. It didn’t matter if it was virtual because all of this was a remedy for my loneliness. Content creation was my remedy.

But what happens when you’re healed? What happens when you don’t need the medicine anymore? I kept going because I enjoyed it, but I didn’t feel the same need for it anymore. I kept going because it had become a habit, a job, and part of my identity. I continue today because it gives me other things that I’m not ready to lose.

Over the last few months, I’ve been searching for myself. My time management has shifted. My life circumstances have changed. My job has changed.

My content creation as a “lifestyle guy” has always more or less reflected my life. But when life changes so much, it’s hard to find a new balance. On one hand, I’m trying to figure out how I can translate my current life into the content I create. On the other hand, I’m asking myself what I truly want to share and how I feel comfortable sharing it.

Right now, I feel more comfortable writing. Once I knew I wanted to share, and that sharing was my therapy, the next question was: how do I want to share? There are many ways to share through content. Sometimes I’m in the mood for a TikTok. Sometimes I just want to post a few words on Threads. Sometimes a selection of pictures from my week feels more in line with how I’m feeling on Instagram. Today, it’s writing an article that only a few people will read but with whom I might have a deeper connection. My new therapy isn’t doing shirtless TikToks; it’s writing. When content creation becomes therapy for me, that’s when the need drives the action. Without that need, I don’t act.

In other words, maybe the only healthy question I should be asking myself is: what do I really need right now, and how can creating content help me share something meaningful about myself?

A few years ago, I quit dating apps. I was spending so much time on them that I stopped enjoying it. I convinced myself that people never looked like their photos, and there was no point trying to meet someone online because it would ruin the magic of those early stages of getting to know someone. Instead, Instagram became my dating app. Not any better. The response rate was lower, and the superficiality was the same. But for a long time, I convinced myself I had made a great decision. Spoiler alert: I hadn’t.

I feel like I spent too much time blaming tools like social media or dating apps, sometimes avoiding them altogether, instead of learning how to use them. You can get addicted to anything—some people even get addicted to work. So, is it really work’s fault, or is it your relationship with work? (That’s a rhetorical question.) I believe it’s often our relationship to things that we need to work on. There’s no point in blaming the tool. Work is there to help you achieve your goals. Dating apps exist to help you meet people. Social media connects you with people all over the world. Sure, these tools aren’t perfect. Instagram, Tinder, TikTok—you name it—they’re all designed to keep you on the platform as long as possible. Obviously, the more attention they have, the more money they make.

But knowing that doesn’t make it easier to resist. Trust me, I still come home late sometimes, with zero self-control, and the next thing I know, I’m swiping left and right at a concerning speed.

That’s why I quit dating apps. Three years later, I landed in Milan. It was my first time in the city, for work. I’d signed with Indastria Model Management, and for the first time, I was going to live in a model apartment and see what it was really like. I’d dreamed of this ever since I got into modeling. Alexandra Lützenkirchen reached out, asking if I was down for a studio shoot in Weinheim. Soon after, I started doing professional photoshoots with photographers across German. That’s when I thought I was made for this. I loved it right away. Gymnastics had been my sport, and modeling in front of a camera felt like performing. I wanted to amaze, to push myself further. The only competition in modeling is with yourself. I did that for years, posting most of my shoots on Instagram, and I built a community out of it. But I never had the chance to live in a model apartment.

I was so excited I shared everything. I documented my days endlessly through TikTok and Instagram vlogs. I took my camera everywhere, taking photos of myself, others, and doing impromptu photoshoots. I didn’t even mind sharing a flat with 20 guys. It felt cool. I’d sleep in my bunk bed with 12 others in the same room, already looking forward to the next day.

I spent a lot of time with the other guys. We became both a friend group and close one-on-one friends. A few weeks in, Mayrison and I went to grab a drink at an average Italian café that also sold pastries, with comfy plastic chairs outside. I ordered a beer—something I picked up from living in Germany—and Mayrison got a cappuccino. We were sitting outside, enjoying the warm Milanese evening. I took a sip of beer when Mayrison asked, “How’s your dating life here?”

“What do you mean?” I replied, a bit confused.

“Have you gone on any dates yet?” he asked, casually.

“No. I’m not on dating apps, so that doesn’t help.”

“Why not?”

“Well, first, I don’t want people to find me on there. Second, I was mostly unsatisfied with the people I met. And third, it wasn’t a healthy habit, so I just quit years ago and never really went back.”

“You’re in Milan—who cares? Try it again.”

I didn’t need much more to be convinced. I’ve always had double standards for how I act in Paris versus when I’m abroad. Being in another country is my way of letting myself experiment. The context helps, but I choose to adopt a different mindset as well.

The next day, I showed him my profile. I avoided using too many professional photos from shoots. I’ve found that people tend to think I’m a fake profile, or they feel intimidated. Which is unhelpful in both cases. So, I picked selfies and casual pictures my friends took.

Mayrison grabbed my phone. “Let me see.” He checked out my profile and offered some suggestions. “Put this shirtless selfie as your first picture.” I went along with it.

It’s been four months now, and I’m back on dating apps. But this time, I’m not 19—I’m 24. The time away helped me figure out what I actually wanted and what I didn’t. Before, I’d often approach people, but things wouldn’t work out because they were already taken or not interested. Dating apps offer a bit more clarity. Sure, the first impression from photos is still different from meeting someone in person, but I’ve surprised myself by saying no right away when things were out of bounds. It’s happened three times already, and I shared the experience once on Threads.

What I’ve learned is that once I was comfortable with myself and mature enough to handle addictive tools like dating apps or social media, I believe I could develop a healthy relationship with them. If that’s not the case, stepping away and returning with more wisdom has helped me multiple times. For a tool to be useful, it needs to remain just that—a tool. That’s how I draw the line between a helpful tool and a worrying obsession.

I like starting my days without asking myself what the hell I want to do today. It annoys me to ask myself a question that isn’t easy to answer, wasting time just thinking about it when I could actually just start doing something. Lately, that “something” has been writing, and I’m really enjoying building the habit.

My mom said she liked my last articles, so I’m happy enough. Her opinion matters. I’m always happy to read your thoughts as well, though it’s rarer. However, that might also be because I send her every article and make sure she reads them. If she doesn’t, I’ll even read them out loud to her. That way, I always get her feedback. 

I haven’t really got you guys used to so much reading from me. I just think reading and writing are deeper, and I needed a more meaningful connection than, well, pictures. I still love pictures, don’t get me wrong. But seriously, what’s with this nonsense: “A picture is worth a thousand words”? I mean, a picture of a hot guy is just a picture of a hot guy. Don’t pretend that intense look is mind-blowing—there are a million of the same out there, probably infinite if you count AI-generated content. Words, on the other hand—a story, a personal experience—that’s something.

We were talking about this with Sami Loft and Alexandre Calvez yesterday. I decided we should try a new restaurant that had just opened near my place, and it was nice seeing both of them together. We did something similar ages ago after a Dyson event when we went out for drinks, but not since then. I’m the kind of guy who usually spends one-on-one time with people because I’ve never really fit into any friend groups, so meeting two friends at once felt a bit different, even a little intimidating. I feel like I’m very open and easygoing with strangers. I can go up to someone and strike up a conversation. But with friends I’m not that close to yet, I tend to be a bit on my guard. I’m afraid of being too open or too weird. I mean, I can be kind of a freak sometimes. 

We were casually having dinner, and as we were finishing our mains, I literally pulled out a card game I’ve been obsessed with lately: Monopoly Deal. No surprise, Sami and Alexandre were a bit taken aback. They probably just found it funny. I felt a bit socially awkward, to be honest. Anyway, after explaining that I’d been playing it with my cousin before dinner and thought it would be fun to bring it along, I started explaining the rules, just to give them a feel for what Monopoly Deal was about. We didn’t end up playing, but after Sami said he doesn’t really like card games, he mentioned one exception, which of course I made him repeat. He said he didn’t like card games, but he liked this one game. What’s so interesting about it, I wondered? The game he was talking about was “We’re Not Really Strangers”. It’s more of a conversation game. There are four sets of cards: Level 1 (perception), Level 2 (connection), Level 3 (reflection), and wild cards, which prompt actions like “Send a message to someone you appreciate and tell them what you like about them.”

Sami is clearly not as weird as I am, so the card game didn’t magically appear out of his pocket. But, intrigued, I pulled out my phone and suggested we could probably play “We’re Not Really Strangers” with ChatGPT. So I prompted exactly that, and it worked. It was fascinating. We came to some interesting conclusions, like how to create content today. Alexandre summed up one discussion: “With AI, content will become polarized. On one side, you’ll have highly curated content, often created with AI, that performs well. On the other side, you’ll have very authentic and personal content that works too. Anything in the middle will probably become irrelevant.”

Sami made an insightful point about content creation too: “People need to both identify with me and dream of being where I am. The more my content shows big projects, like redoing my entire apartment, the more viewers feel like they’re doing it with me. The more I accomplish, the more they feel they’ve done it too, except I spent days decorating, and they watched a one-minute video. I believe their dopamine levels are higher than if I just show one small thing.”

I didn’t come to any notable conclusions that I can remember, but I did add to Sami’s point: “People grow through their connections with others. Many believe we can grow on our own because personal development is often marketed that way, but that’s a myth. We’re always inspired by others. René Girard and Jean-Michel Oughourlian researched mimetic desire. We desire what others desire, and it’s inaccurate to think otherwise. When we study the brain, simply watching someone perform an action activates the same brain areas as when you do the activity yourself. It’s the concept behind mirror neurons. So, the dopamine levels your audience gets when they watch a video of you doing lots of things in one minute give them the feeling they’ve done it themselves—just in a much shorter time. Maybe that’s why social media is so addictive.”

Of course, we talked a lot about ourselves during the game. I opened up about how I started writing articles. It’s like a diary, except I know I’m sharing it with the world, so I’m careful with certain things and try to stay appropriate. Alexandre challenged me to go even further: “If you’re going down that road, go all in. You can always change names or ask AI to do it, but the kind of personal experience people share in books or other writing that resonates goes beyond what most would be willing to share.”

I started realizing we were talking a lot about me, so I tried to steer the conversation back to them. I’ve been a bit traumatized by being called self-centered by family members, and it’s true to some extent. I’ve always been very focused on my goals, so I’m constantly on guard now, trying not to talk about myself for too long because I don’t want to become annoying. So I said, “Enough about me, how are you guys doing anyway?”

I feel incredibly fortunate to be back here in Paris. I really like my apartment, especially its central location. I want to start fully embracing the potential of this place. Although Mathieu still has all his stuff here, the good news is that my sister Louise, my cousin Mathieu, and Marie-Mathilde have found an apartment where they’ll all be living together. They even have their own rooms, which was something they had to compromise on when they were struggling to find a place before.

Yesterday, we went to Alma to celebrate with Mathieu. There’s an app for content creators and influencers in Paris called Hemblem App. If a restaurant accepts your reservation through the app, they invite you in exchange for three Instagram Stories if you’re an influencer, or a video the restaurant can use on their Instagram if you’re a content creator. I love using the app to try out new places. The great thing about it is that not only can I choose which restaurants I want to visit, but the selection on Hemblem App is already pretty good, so I usually trust their recommendations.

Sometimes I start my day by asking myself, “What do I want to create today? What do I want to do? How do I want to spend my time?” I love these questions because they usually get me excited to start my day. I really look for the excitement in the things I want to do. I try to take advantage of the morning to make space and time for the things I want to do more of but haven’t had time for lately.

The problem is, I sometimes start my days with less healthy questions like, “What do I have to do today? Where do I need to be? What are my constraints?” When I ask myself these questions, I usually feel stress building up. I feel annoyed and trapped. I typically ask these questions when I haven’t planned enough in advance. When I start my day knowing I have tons to do but not exactly what, that’s when the day feels overwhelming. It’s usually the kind of day where I struggle to be productive or do anything meaningful, or where I never get to the things I really want to do.

It’s interesting how many people take time in the morning to do something for themselves. Whether it’s a workout, like it used to be for me, or writing, like it is now, I feel that this specific moment in the day is crucial for setting the right tone. You might not need to spend three hours a day on the meaningful thing you want to do—maybe just one hour is enough. What if you could squeeze it in during the morning? Wake up earlier, even if it’s challenging, but wake up excited to start your day with one clear objective. I could see myself doing that for an hour of reading each day.

I believe morning routines are essential. I think it matters less what you do during that time, because it’s so personal and can change often. I stopped working out in the morning because I felt it was taking time away from my day. When I worked out in the morning, I had to be awake enough to get through the workout. As a result, I never made myself wake up at 6:00 AM for exercise. It was always challenging, and although it got easier over time, it was still physically demanding. Despite the music, the glass of water waiting for me all night, and my healthy breakfast ready right after I put on my clothes (which were also prepared), it was tough.

While this can build discipline and be a great challenge, I’ve come to believe it’s not healthy to force things too much. When I push myself too hard, it usually doesn’t last, and I end up giving up quickly. Now, I believe it’s healthier to wake up happy and in a more aligned energy to start the day smoothly. I also wanted an activity where I felt productive and that was meaningful to me. For me, that’s writing and sharing what I write.

When I get bored of writing or feel I don’t have much interesting to share, I might switch to reading. The good thing about reading and writing is that I can do them while I’m still waking up. My reward, after starting my first productive activity and reaching my goal for the day, is a cup of coffee. After writing for about an hour, it’s the perfect time to enjoy it.

I learned from a Mel Robbins podcast episode about sleep (I can find the link later) that drinking coffee right after waking up is actually counterproductive. There’s a specific scientific reason for this. When we wake up, we still have epinephrine in our bodies, also known as the sleep hormone. That’s why we can feel a bit groggy and not fully awake. This hormone takes about one to two hours to fade away before it starts building up again, making us tired at the end of the day. The interesting part about coffee is that its caffeine doesn’t eliminate epinephrine; instead, it traps it for a few hours, tricking you into feeling energized. But once the caffeine wears off, the epinephrine is released, and you feel even more tired. This creates a vicious cycle of needing more coffee. The healthiest time to drink coffee is probably when you’re not tired.

This was a mind-blowing fact that helped me refine my morning routine, placing my coffee at the right moment and choosing the right activity to start my day happily, rather than grumpily forcing myself through an early workout on caffeine.

I hope this offers some insight. I strive to share my thoughts freely, just like in a diary, though here I’m aware it’s published, so I might hold back just a bit from being the complete health nut that I am 🙂
